Saturday

Today was the first day of something Pamela and I have been wanting to start for a while. A sort-of fellowship-type group with no real purpose in mind except to get people together to have fun and meet each other. For our first outing we went hiking up a quaint little mountain called Takao that is just west of Tokyo. It's a fun hike that can be stretched into a day-thing if you take your time and stop to eat lunch at the top.

We did just that. The air was clean and the weather beautiful, almost hot, but we were lucky to have taken the trail that had shade the whole way. It was all muddy, though, because we've entered rainy season. Whenever I've hiked Mt. Takao I find the nicest Japanese people hiking along with me. Smiles and "konnichiwa"s (hellos) everywhere. It's amazing what the countryside does for people.

When my group got to the summit we found a grassy knoll to eat our lunch on and read Psalm 19. (This time everyone in the group happened to be Christian.) After that instead of hiking back down Takao we ended up taking another trail that took us over three more mountains before we finally descended back down into the valley. It was wonderful but rather exhausting because I hadn't prepared mentally to climb 4 mountains yesterday. Most of the path was along the ridge line, though, so we got spectacular views and not a lot of steep ups and downs. The train ride back to Tokyo was an hour long so we all got to take a short nap before getting back to the city.
